China Opens Nuclear Power Plants to Public

Beijing Offers Rare Glimpse Into Atomic Energy Program

Tourists Can Now Visit Nine Facilities Across the Country

In a rare move aimed at garnering support for nuclear power amid increasing concerns over climate change, China has opened nine of its nuclear plants to the public.

The online booking system allows tourists to plan visits to facilities across the country, including the decommissioned Cold War-era China 816 Nuclear Military Plant, a plutonium and weapons processing facility buried deep in the mountains.

China is the world's largest atomic electricity generator, and it has ambitious plans to expand its nuclear power capacity in the coming years. However, the move to open up its nuclear facilities to the public is a significant departure from past practice, and it is likely to be closely watched by other countries.
